New mayor elected for Ealing

The new Mayor of Ealing donned his civic robes for the first time after fellow councillors elected her at Annual Council on Tuesday night (19th May 2009).

Councillor Barbara Yerolemou, who has been a member of the Council since May 1990 takes over from Councillor Ian Green.

The new Mayor will be assisted in her duties by Councillor John Ross, who she appointed as her deputy.

The Mayor has selected two official charities to support during her term of office. Councillor Yerolemou will be holding events throughout the year to raise money for Ealing Mencap and all the borough’s divisions of St John Ambulance.

Ealing Mencap needs funds for a project to rebuild the Enterprise Lodge in Perivale, which is a much used hub for people with learning disabilities and their carers.

The charity has already raised more than £830,000 and Councillor Yerolemou is hoping her fundraising efforts throughout the year will help bring the charity closer to their £1.5million fundraising target for the centre.

The Mayor is already President of the Ealing branch of St John Ambulance and has a long involvement with the charity. Councillor Yerolemou will be raising funds to provide new equipment for all five local branches of the charity, which receives no government funding.

Councillor Yerolemou said: "I'm delighted to have been appointed as Mayor. It's a great honour and I am very much looking forward to starting my official duties."
